Donuts & Politics
Tomorrow is the big day, ladies!! It’s National Donut Day!!! WooHoo!!
Indulge in the confectionary delight at a nearby Donkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme distributor, or local bakery or grocery story to get your favorite sweet-treat and celebrate the (un)healthy concoction of sugar and flour and icing and everything else donutty. And when you’re done with putting your mark on National Donut Day, put your mark on a ballet.
November 5th is THE big day for our country, but choosing the right candidates may seem as difficult as selecting just the right donut on a wall of dozens of scrumptious varieties. This post is in no way intended to be political. I’m not about to advocate for one candidate over another. In fact, it would be to our advantage as Christians to not seek out the advice or opinions of any other human being or news outlet or social media influencer or political expert or celebrity. The only one that should be providing us insights on how to vote is the Holy Spirit.
The only advice I want to share is something the Holy Spirit laid on my heart this morning during my morning-coffee-Jesus time. Below is the scripture that spoke to me on how I should vote. Paul wrote this 2,000 years ago, and I strongly believe it rings true today. Paul ended his letter to the church in Philippi with instructions on how they were to face each day and each decision in their lives. We need to focus on these same qualities as we consider each candidate on the ticket as well as the platform on which each stand. Is he/she true? Noble? Just? Pure? Lovely? Of good report? Virtuous? Praiseworth? Is their political agenda truth? Honorable? Just? Pure? Lovely? Commendable? Excellent? Worthy of praise?
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
I want to challenge you to do two things during this challenging, confusing, and critical time in our country. Both challenges are Biblical and directives from God thru His apostle, Paul.
On election day, meditate on the qualities outlined by Paul and apply them to your choice of candidates.
Starting on Wednesday, November 6th, pray for whoever was placed in office regardless of the results.
“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
